Building Plan Books at the Bristol Records Office

The Old City area of Bristol, centred on Corn Street, is to be given a bold makeover to make it more pedestrian-friendly and attractive to the local community and visitors.

As part of this process BaRAS have been commissioned by the City Council to do a detailed survey of the cellars in some of the local streets, in case pavement levels need to be altered. We needed to consult a considerable number of Building Plan Books which are kept by our colleagues in the Archives of the Record Office at B Bond. Thanks are extended to Archives Manager Richard Burley and Senior Archivist Julian Warren and their team for allowing us access to the research room so we could complete this task. Owing to the sterling efforts of Matt, Max, Sarah and Dave, which involved much lugging and lifting, 71 of these giant volumes were produced in just one day for BaRAS’ Cai Mason to photograph!
